More than 1000 veterans lived some portion of their post-war life in Alabama.
While some soldiers arrived in the state before its inclusion into the union, many rushed to Alabama during the height of a migration called Alabama Fever.
Alabama veterans were often young and of low rank during the war.
Still, many came from all walks of life.
Some notable Alabamians who moved south after the war were future governors, William Wyatt Bibb and Thomas Bibb, whose father had served as a captain in the Revolutionary Army.
Among the Revolutionary veterans were free Black men, Frederick Gowan and Jim Capers, as well as women, Mary Witherspoon Conyers, and Elizabeth Duckett Casey.
Over 90% of Alabama based veterans were born in one of the 13 colonies before American Independence.
