[laughs] I guess I just love the sound.
Its a really pure really solid.
You've got the drone sound.
And when the drones are tuned really well, there's just this umbrella of sound above you.
[bagpipes tuning] Even though the instrument itself is quite simple, there's just so much going on, and you're underneath it.
[bagpipes] I started right before I turned seven.
It took a couple more years of learning before, It took a couple more years of learning before, my teacher decided that I was ready to play with the competition band.
[bagpipes] Since I've been in the band, the communitys been great, the competitions have been really fun.
Being the only youth band, Being the only youth band, we play in the adult Grade 5.
Theres Grade 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1.
1 is very elite.
Here in Colorado we have 4 and 5.
But we are often really competitive.
20 seconds.
Um... We'll go that way now.
Um... Go ahead and start getting in position.
Scooch this way a little bit.
Just jump in.
Right.
Be quick!
We got eight minutes.
Alright, yeah.
Sounds good.
Alright, lets go!
[bagpipes] Today the band played one of the events that we compete in which is something known as a quick march medley.
There's a time limit for that.
You can't go too short, cant go too long.
And you have four tunes youve got to play.
So there's no stopping.
Once you go, you go until you're done.
March!
[bagpipes] [bagpipes] [drums] [bagpipes tuning] Quick march medley.
Wooh!
Da da da da da [indistinguishable] quick, march!
[bagpipes] [drums] It's a lot of work to push and blow at the same time.
So it's tiring, but even if it is tiring, you keep playing because as a group, together, we can make music only if we're all playing together.
Youre playing, and everyone else is playing the same thing.
And its just, like, theres so much more sound that comes out of it than just the sound from my pipes.
I mean it is cool to see people that are, you know, really excited by that, by something that, you know, Im doing.
I heard a bagpiper playing at a church service.
There's a little bit of, you know, heritage my last name is McConnell and I just wanted to do that.
The piper connected us with the Colorado Youth Pipe Band.
I got to play with that piper at that church service for the past few years which has been, you know, a super cool experience.
I played bagpipes with my brother at my grandpa's funeral.
I played bagpipes with my brother at my grandpa's funeral.
I played bagpipes with my brother at my grandpa's funeral.
I really enjoyed doing it.
It's really nice how you can come together and do something respectful for your life with this instrument.
When life gives you a house, move it.
