Parks and recreation.
We're hiking these urban trails and I'm taking an archery lesson.
How cool is that?
I'm so excited.
Come on, let's go.
This trail system features approximately 3.2 miles of interconnected trails.
It includes six main trails offering a variety of loops and routes through scenic desert terrain and unique geological formations.
Trail difficulty ranges from easy to moderate, making it accessible for walkers, runners, bikers, and casual hikers.
One way of accessing the trail system is at Whitney Mesa, where small parking lot is available off of sunset.
Here I met up with Chuck Appleby.
Yeah.
Oh, water.
Water.
Water and the desert.
And the desert.
What is right?
It's so neat to see that.
And that comes from a natural spring being surrounded by neighborhoods.
And the city is a bit wild, but the views, I can tell you are amazing.
This is such a great local hike.
Not only does it have the views, it is a great place to get in your steps and some cardio for a lot of people.
This is a daily routine.
The City of Henderson puts a lot of thought and planning.. Full benches to look out over the entire city.
Yeah.
Know you love it.
You can relax after your nice hike up here.
Yeah.
Look at the look at these views.
And again, I don't think a lot of people realize it's up here.
No.
And it's literally in your backyard.
And that's another great thing about Henderson Parks and Rec that you guys have parks all over the place.
Trail system.
Tell me about your trail system.
So we have 300 miles worth of trails, which I just learned this morning, which is amazing that we have that much trails.
And it's literally right outside your back door.
And you have views like this.
And you didn't even know it.
I've driven by this when I was younger many times, and never even realized that this was here until I started working for the city.
Work nearby here, live nearby here, and would drive by never imagining that it's here.
We talked about your great trails, also your parks.
I mean, there's one down here.
We were just looking at that not too long ago.
There's 72 of them in the valley, so we have quite a few of them.
And yes, there's one right over that cliff right there.
And you guys have a great website with all of that information.
We do.
It's, City of henderson.com.
Or you can also go to the Henderson happenings.com and find out all the classes that we have.
Well this has been so much fun.
What else do we have out there overlooking this?
You have your Whitney Mesa Recreation Center.
So we do.
We're going to be headed over there in a little bit.
But we have pickleball courts.
We have tennis courts, we have a rec center.
We have a pool over there.
We have campgrounds over there.
Campgrounds.
Tell me about that.
So it's an area that if you want.. you can actually reserve the area and have never done that in the city.
I will tell you, the planes flying over every 30 minutes, you have to get used to it a little bit.
You get used to it.
There's a fire pit over there.
You can have a fire and roast s'mores and do all that fun stuff.
And then we have a archery range.
You want to try that out?
I would love to.
I'm always up for good adventure, .. And I've been practicing with my knife.
I don't think I'm doing it the right way, but.
Let's go.
Well, let's go try it out.
I'm ready.
I'm excited.
And when I found out the Whit.. range and offered lessons, I was so excited to try it out.
Chuck set me up with an instructor and join me for a lesson.
Safety first.
We walk through the rules of the range.
We then got to learning the proper stance, grip, knocking the arrow, drawing the bow your mouth to where your index finger is touching your mouth.
Point the tip of the arrow, aiming the yellow points right below it, right below and not exactly at it.
Okay.
.. It took me a minute, but I had a really good instructor and before I knew it, I was hitting the target arrow.
I'm not saying I'm ready for the Hunger Games or anything like that, but I think I did okay.
Bullseye, I did it!
Oh, great.
Instructor.
All right.
Great company here, I did it.
You guys all done?
All right.
I get to only two sessions and you guys can come out and do this again.
It is so awesome that the City of Henderson offers so much to see and do and play and come out here and try archery like I did.
All right, guys, I'm going to continue having fun here.. Until next time, I'll see you out on the trail.
I did it well, let's go get.
Can I take your picture by it?
Like, oh my gosh.
I did it.
Oh that's fun.
